Like a page from Mary Shelley or clip from some vintage horror, “Looping” is eminent and eerie in a way that leaves more than just goose-bumps, but a buzz in the bones rather. Lyrically cool and disturbing the song describes the victim to a psychological spell that is caught in a feedback cycle. Beneath the words too, dwell conniving guitar riffs which crunch and grind against a thumping rhythm. Yet, despite the melodic appeal there is a sense of confliction, some kind of harmonic crossover pioneered by the ‘against-the-grain’ sound of Phantom Phunk’s secondary vocalist, Hector Alexander. Through clenched teeth, the vocals reveal the tension within the narrative, changing expressions as if undergoing an episode of personality combustion. The tune clings to juxtaposition in a way that may not invite immediate listener gratification, however further listens will no doubt inflect the daring and profound dynamics to this mix.
